How to Exchange Your Brazilian Driving License in Germany

Using a Brazilian driving licence in Germany. Brazil is not in Anlage 11 FeV, so there is no test-free exchange.

A Brazilian car licence is not listed in Anlage 11 FeV. After you establish normal residence in Germany, the foreign licence is recognised for 6 months. Then you need a German licence and must pass the theory and practical tests. Checked on the BMV page and Anlage 11 on 2026-10-31. Not legal advice.

What German rules say about a Brazilian licence

Brazil does not appear in Anlage 11 FeV. There is no conversion that skips both the theory and practical tests for this country as a whole.

The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMV) says a non-EU/EEA licence is valid for six months after you establish normal residence in Germany. After that period it is no longer recognised.

To keep driving you need a German driving licence. Because this country is not in Anlage 11, you must pass the German theory test and the practical driving test. Documents and any translation requirement are set by the local Führerscheinstelle.

In exceptional cases the authority may extend recognition by up to six months if you can show you will not have normal residence in Germany for longer than 12 months.

How it works

  1. Establish normal residence in Germany.
  2. You may drive on a Brazilian full licence for 6 months from that date (non-EU/EEA rule).
  3. Brazil is not in Anlage 11 FeV, so there is no test-free exchange.
  4. Apply at the local Führerscheinstelle and pass the theory and practical tests for a German licence.

Who this helps

  • People who establish normal residence in Germany.
  • Holders of a full foreign car licence from the country named on this page.
  • Not a guide for temporary visitors only, and not legal advice.

Examples

Normal residence

The six-month clock starts when you establish normal residence in Germany. Temporary stays are different on the BMV page.

Local authority

Conversion and tests are handled by the local driver licensing authority (Führerscheinstelle), not by a federal online form alone.

Where this was checked

Checked on 2026-10-31 against the BMV foreign-licence page and Anlage 11 FeV. Not legal advice.
