To address prolonged processing times exceeding 17 weeks for Irish Residence Permit (IRP) renewals, Ireland’s Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration (DOJ) has issued a temporary Travel Confirmation Notice.
Who Qualifies for the Temporary Concession?
This initiative allows non-EEA nationals legally residing in Ireland to travel abroad and re-enter the country using an expired IRP card between July 13, 2026, and August 31, 2026, provided they satisfy the following conditions:
- The renewal application was submitted prior to the expiration of their existing IRP card.
- The traveler carries a printed copy of the official Travel Confirmation Notice.
- The traveler carries proof of renewal submission (such as the official ISD email acknowledgment) alongside their recently expired physical card.
Essential Checklist Before Departing Ireland
Employers and international assignees should confirm the following before departure:
- Contact air carriers in advance to ensure compliance with the Irish DOJ announcement.
- Verify transit requirements for any intermediate international airports, as third-country border officials retain jurisdiction over entry requirements.
Notice: Individuals who submitted renewal applications after their permit expired are strictly ineligible for this temporary arrangement and must await their new physical IRP card before traveling.
