Tax calculator methodology

Transparent estimates for relocation planning — how we model income tax, social contributions, and take-home pay. Not a substitute for official software or professional advice.

What we calculate

  • Progressive income tax using published marginal brackets
  • Standard deduction / personal allowance where modelled
  • Employee (and approximate self-employed) social contributions
  • For US states and Canadian provinces: federal/national + regional layers
  • Effective rate, monthly net, and a simple Tax Freedom Day date

What we do not include

  • Every credit, deduction, AMT, local city tax, or property tax
  • Treaty relief, FEIE elections, or multi-year residency tests
  • Employer-side payroll taxes
  • Investment / capital gains special regimes (unless a page explicitly says so)

Privacy

The interactive calculator runs in your browser. Gross income you enter is not required to be sent to MigrantIQ servers for a basic estimate.

Sources & refresh

Each jurisdiction page lists primary sources (IRS, HMRC, CRA, national tax authorities) with an access date. We target an annual tax-year refresh before the main filing season for major destinations.

See also editorial standards.

Estimates for informational and educational purposes only — not tax advice. Rules vary by residency, deductions, credits, and filing status. Always verify with official authorities or a qualified tax professional.
