Tax ID and National Number in Germany: A Guide for Newcomers

Settle task: Steueridentifikationsnummer (Steuer-ID). Official links below. This is not a determination that you qualify.

In Germany, individuals receive an 11-digit tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer / Steuer-ID). It is usually issued after you register your address (Anmeldung). The Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) explains how to request it if you never received the letter. This is not the same as a tax office reference number for a specific assessment.

Which ID this page means

Germany’s personal tax ID is the Steueridentifikationsnummer (often called Steuer-ID). It is different from a local tax office file number used on some assessments.

How newcomers usually get it

After you register your residence (Anmeldung), the tax ID is generally sent by post. Make-it-in-Germany and BZSt describe the process. If the letter never arrives, BZSt explains how to request the number.

What this page does not do

It does not replace Anmeldung, and it does not assign you a tax class (Steuerklasse).

How it works

  1. Complete residence registration (Anmeldung) at the local residents’ office.
  2. Wait for the Steuer-ID letter, or follow BZSt instructions if it does not arrive.
  3. Give the Steuer-ID to your employer when they ask for payroll setup.
  4. Do not confuse it with a separate Elster login or local tax-office reference.

Who this helps

  • Newcomers to Germany
  • Expatriates
  • International students
  • Individuals relocating for work
