DRIVING LICENCE EXCHANGE BY COUNTRY

Origin × destination licence rules. Checked cells cite a date. Blank IDP days stay blank.

Whether you can exchange a foreign car licence depends on origin and destination. Use the destination pages and convert-from pairs for checked rules. IDP day counts stay blank until an official source states them.

LICENCE EXCHANGE WIZARD

Pick where your licence was issued and where you need to drive. Planning notes only — verify with the transport authority.

WHAT THIS HUB IS

Driving after you move is a destination rule problem. Some origins exchange a full car licence. Some need theory and practical tests after a visitor or new-resident window. An International Driving Permit (IDP) helps for a limited time in some places and does nothing useful in others. This hub holds the origin × destination matrix language with check dates.

HOW TO USE IT

 * Open a destination (for example United Kingdom, Germany, United Arab Emirates).
 * Open a convert-from pair when you know your licence origin.
 * Use the short wizard on this landing when you want origin → destination guidance without browsing every pair.

CHECKED DESTINATIONS (EXAMPLES)

 * United Kingdom (Great Britain) — GOV.UK exchange rules for residents with a full car licence. Designated origins can exchange within published windows. Non-designated origins (including India) cannot exchange: drive up to 12 months from residency, then theory and practical tests. England, Wales, and Scotland only on those pages — Northern Ireland is separate.
 * Germany — BMV / Anlage 11 themes. Non-listed origins typically need tests after six months as a resident. US, Canada, and Australia stay unverified at country level here until a national source is checked.
 * United Arab Emirates (Dubai RTA) — whether you exchange or take tests depends on RTA’s published country tables (checked 2026-10-31 [tel:20261031]). UK, Germany, Japan, South Africa, and the US appear on the any-nationality exchange list among our origins; India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and several others do not. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other emirates are different authorities — do not treat Dubai text as UAE-wide.

WHAT WE REFUSE TO INVENT

`idpDays` stays null until an official source states a number. Pair pages that are still short stay noindex under the uniqueness gate. Fiction about “easy exchange for every nationality” does not ship. If two blogs disagree and the authority is silent, the cell stays cautious.

SETTLE VS DRIVING

Settle may include a short “licence” task pointer. The deep matrix lives here. Do not maintain two conflicting essays. If settle points at driving, that is intentional.

RELATED TOOLS ON THE WIDER SITE

Calculator-shaped licence tools elsewhere, if present, are not a substitute for the destination pages that cite a check date. When in doubt, follow the licensing authority linked in sources.

HOW IT WORKS

 1. Choose your destination country on this hub.
 2. Open convert-from/{origin} if your pair exists.
 3. Read the checked rule and the official source URL.
 4. Ignore blank IDP day fields — they are intentionally empty.

WHO THIS HELPS

 * New residents who need a local licence path
 * People comparing exchange vs test origins
 * Not a substitute for the licensing authority’s forms

EXAMPLES

INDIA → UK

India is not on the designated exchange list for Great Britain. Plan for the 12-month window, then theory and practical tests.

UK → DUBAI

UK appears on Dubai RTA’s any-nationality exchange table (checked 31 October 2026). Still need Emirates ID / UAE Pass steps and RTA’s process.

BLANK IDP DAYS

If a page shows no IDP day count, that is intentional — not a missing scrape.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN EVERY FOREIGN LICENCE BE EXCHANGED?

No. It depends on origin and destination. Non-designated origins often need tests.

WHAT IS AN IDP?

An International Driving Permit is usually a translation aid. It is not a second licence. Day limits stay blank here until an official source states them.

IS UAE ONE SYSTEM?

No. Dubai uses RTA. Other emirates have their own authorities.

WHY ARE SOME PAIR PAGES NOINDEX?

Short or unverified pairs stay out of the index until they meet the uniqueness and source gate.

WHERE DO I START FOR BRITAIN?

Open /driving/united-kingdom/ and the GOV.UK exchange page linked there.
